Description
The Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) provides strategic and operational direction of the ASC to ensure continued growth and success. The CAO reports to the Governing Board and is an integral part of the leadership team. Participates in business direction and understands the processes to maximize value for Surgery Center of Lynchburg's (SCL) opportunities strategically and operationally. In addition to having overall responsibility for the direction and management of SCL, the position is responsible for the effective and efficient utilization of resources while building and maintaining strong relationships with physicians and department coordinators.
Requirements
Key Responsibilities
- Direct the day-to-day operations of the ambulatory surgery center, ensuring efficient scheduling, patient flow, staffing, and service delivery.
- Lead administrative and operational planning in collaboration with physicians, coordinators, and the governing body.
- Oversee financial performance, including budgeting, revenue cycle coordination, cost control, purchasing, and vendor management.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, local, and accreditation requirements, including patient safety, infection prevention, life safety, emergency preparedness, and privacy standards.
- Monitor quality metrics, patient experience, incident reporting, and performance improvement initiatives to drive high standards of care and service.
- Directs all facility payor contracting activities, including negotiation and renewals.
- Responsible for maintaining all facility insurance coverage, including malpractice, commercial, and cyber insurance.
- Support human resources functions including recruitment, onboarding, staff development, performance management, retention, and employee engagement.
- Responsible for ensuring adequate staffing for SCL’s subsidiary, Surgery Center of Lynchburg Anesthesia Services, LLC.
- Coordinate credentialing, privileging, policy administration, and operational documentation as required by governance and regulatory standards.
- Responsible for the administration and oversight of all share sales and redemptions.
- Negotiate all vendor/service contracts to support uninterrupted clinical and facility operations.
- Serve as a liaison among shareholders, physicians, staff, patients, and vendors.
- Develop and implement strategic initiatives to support center growth, service line expansion, and operational excellence.
- Promote a culture of safety, accountability, teamwork, and patient-centered service.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in business administration, healthcare administration, nursing, or a related field required; master’s degree preferred.
- Minimum of 3–5 years of progressive leadership experience in an ambulatory surgery center, outpatient surgical setting, or closely related healthcare environment.
- Demonstrated knowledge of ASC operations, contract negotiating, regulatory compliance, accreditation standards, quality management, and healthcare finance.
- Strong leadership, communication, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to build collaborative relationships with physicians, clinical teams, and business staff.
- Experience with budgeting, reporting, operational analytics, and performance improvement initiatives.
- Proficiency with electronic health records, scheduling systems, and standard business software.
