The Department of Surgery, Division of Surgical Oncology,at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine is seeking an academic fellowship-trained, board-certified/eligible, breast/soft tissue surgeon interested in an academic career as well as an administrative role serving as Surgical Director of our Breast Program. The candidate must have also successfully completed an accredited general surgery residency and be committed to teaching, progress in scholarly activity, and excellence in patient care. Academic track and tenure status are dependent upon the candidate’s experience and qualifications. The surgical oncology service at the University of Kentucky enjoys a dual service model working with the Markey Comprehensive Cancer Center.  

This position will involve duties at the main UK campus in Lexington, Kentucky. The Department of Surgery, Division of Surgical Oncology, is a vital part of the UK Markey Cancer Center, the only NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in Kentucky.

Our department is home to three fully accredited residencies – general surgery, plastic surgery, and cardiothoracic surgery. We also have a number of ACGME-approved fellowships including thoracic surgery, colon and rectal surgery, surgical critical care, vascular surgery, and hand surgery. Each member of our Surgical Oncology team is committed to training medical students, residents, and future surgical oncologists. We anticipate submitting an application to the ACGME for an accredited complex general surgical oncology fellowship program within the next 12 months.  

 

Our team consists of academic surgeons who build clinical programs, while striving to become local and national leaders in their domains of practice. It is our goal to mentor our surgical oncologists to become the future leaders of UK, the Markey Comprehensive Cancer Center, and other academic institutions across the US.  

 

Our research programs encompass multiple areas of investigation including clinical and translational science. The members of the Division of Surgical Oncology are actively engaged in investigational studies that seek to improve the outcomes of our cancer patients. It is an expectation that each of our faculty will conduct investigational research in one of the major areas of research including patient-centered outcomes, clinical trials, translational research, and bench research. Clinical research includes participation in cooperative group and industry-sponsored studies in addition to innovative investigator-initiated trials. Many investigations involve collaboratively working with investigators in the Markey Cancer Center, providing access to outstanding shared services and other support that enhances research opportunities.
