The Lead Medical Laboratory Technician (Phlebotomy) position is located at North West Health Care Center (NWHCC), in San Antonio, Texas within the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service. Duties may include but are not limited to: -Distributes and balances the workflow within the various sections ensuring even flow and distribution of workload. -Assigns work, sets priorities and develops work schedules for blood collection and processing. -Ensures sufficient supplies, personnel, etc., are available to meet operational requirements. -Report operational problems that cannot be solved to the supervisor. -Implements standards of quantity and quality of work and ensuring local operating procedures and instructions are followed for work accomplishment. -Monitors and performs workload reporting procedures, ensuring accuracy of procedure counts and reports workload to appropriate office for accounting. -Prepares and submits equipment request actions to maintain and upgrade equipment as required. -Resolves simple informal complaints of employees. -Sees to working conditions such as ventilation, lighting, and safety. -Interfaces with physicians, nursing service personnel and patients to resolve problems or questions concerning specimen collection requirements in the absence of the supervisor of the section. -Makes information suggestion to supervisor as requested concerning promotions, reassignment, recognition of outstanding performance and personnel/personal needs. -Collects blood specimens from ambulatory or bed patients via venipuncture using standard procedures. -Performs timed blood collection procedures such as glucose and lactose tolerance tests. -Performs serological procedures using techniques and equipment. -Dresses the skin puncture site after blood collection. -Gives on-the-job training, competency training to new employees, clinical laboratory science students, medical school students, and nursing students, in accordance with established procedures and practices. -Performs clerical duties in the processing area; answering telephones, looks up test results, and gives results to official healthcare provider.
