The Nurse Manager is responsible for the management of nursing staff and technicians within the surgical center as well as the direct care of the surgical patient within the licensed scope of practice and surgery center. The Nurse Manager will also be responsible for scheduling, time & attendance, and performance management. This is a full-time position.
Communicates with the Administrator regarding all significant issues of the clinical area
Assumes responsibilities as deemed appropriate during the absence of the Administrator
Works flexible hours in assuming responsibility and accountability for providing patient care as deemed necessary.
Monitors the practice of all assigned clinical staff
Ensures that clinical staffing patterns are implemented in the clinical area(s)
Assists with the assigning of clinical duties based upon education, training, competencies, and job descriptions
Guides and directs the clinical staff in assigned unit(s)
Responsible for staff scheduling to include approval of time and attendance
Responsible for annual and probationary performance evaluations
Promotes an environment of cooperation and collaborative action among co-workers of assigned unit(s) and other clinical areas within the center
Coordinates and integrates clinical areas with one another to ensure a continuum of care for the patient
Participates in maintaining a safe environment for staff and patients
Participates in staff orientation and staff education activities
Participates in planning and budgeting for supply management
Participates in adhering to current standards and regulations while updating and revising as applicable
Demonstrates analytical abilities necessary to identify a problem and to develop a sound plan of action for resolution.
Wears appropriate attire according to facility policy
Follows universal precautions (i.e. handwashing)
Uses Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) according to policy and need
Practices recognized principles of cleanliness and sanitation
Correctly disposes of sharps
Correctly handles hazardous and contaminated materials
Demonstrates the ability to function in emergency situations
Ensures that emergency equipment is available at all times
Practices lifesaving support measures as needed
Demonstrate understanding of emergency equipment and malfunction

EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES:
Anticipates the need for equipment and supplies
Assures all equipment is functioning before use
Removes malfunctioning equipment from use, if applicable, and labels it accordingly
Operates equipment according to manufacturers instructions
Operates mechanical and electrical equipment correctly
Uses supplies judiciously and in a cost-effective manner
Replaces used supplies in a timely manner
Communicates/documents provision of equipment and supplies
ENVIRONMENT OF CARE:
Regulates temperature and humidity as indicated
Adheres to electrical safety policies and procedures
Monitors sensory environment
Maintains traffic patterns
Identifies the patient using 2 different identifiers
Checks patient identification bed sheet and compares the name with the chart and name label
Verifies physicians orders
Physiologically monitors the patient
Obtains vital signs
Assesses/monitors physical symptoms
Assesses/monitors behavioral changes
Initiates nursing actions based on interpretation of physiological changes
Assesses the psycho-social health status of the patient/family
Elicits the perception of surgery

Communicates/documents administration of medications, including IV fluids
CLINICAL FUNCTIONS: PRE-PROCEDURE
Verifies procedure with patient, physician order and with signed consent; obtains consent if necessary
Notes sensory and physical impairments
Coordinates nursing care relative to patients medical history
Initiates IV access per physician orders
CLINICAL FUNCTIONS: OPERATING ROOM
Prepares equipment appropriate for patient and procedure based on patient needs
Verifies correct patient, correct procedure, correct physician and correct lens power, if applicable
Demonstrates the ability to position and prep the patient for procedure
Correctly grounds patient for electrosurgical safety
Handles tissue specimens correctly and accurately
Demonstrates appropriate knowledge of equipment utilized during procedure
Demonstrates appropriate disinfection of equipment after use
Demonstrates ability to create and maintain a sterile field
uses principles of aseptic technique
initiates corrective action when breaks in technique occur
inspects sterile items for contamination before opening
Demonstrates ability to perform sharps and instrument counts
follows established policies and procedures for counts
initiates corrective actions when counts are incorrect
communicates results of counts appropriately
Clinical Functions: Recovery Room
Assesses pain level post-operatively
Assesses patient findings utilizing Aldrete scoring system
Ensures patient has transportation for discharge
Discharges patient according to established criteria
