| The Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) will have knowledge of varied respiratory therapy procedures/techniques, anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology; common respiratory drugs and operating characteristics of respiratory equipment and devices. Respiratory service areas include but are not limited to Inpatient Acute Care, Home Oxygen Clinic, Pulmonary Function Clinic, CPAP Clinic, Home Sleep Testing Clinic, Continued Living Center, Emergency/Urgent Care, Neurology Clinic, and ALS Clinic. This position is utilized as a staff Registered Respiratory Therapist that administers all forms of respiratory care including treatments and diagnostic studies of a specialized and complex nature to ambulatory and non-ambulatory patients independently or under supervision. The Respiratory Therapist will assist in the diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of patients suffering from cardiac failure, asthma, emphysema, COPD, shock, pneumonia, and other disorders affecting, either directly or indirectly, the cardiopulmonary system and make recommendations regarding alternative treatment directions. Duties may consist of various pharmaceutical agents, gases, aerosols, and intermittent positive adjunctive devices that enable them to perform their tasks, as well as: The incumbent demonstrates the knowledge and ability to successfully perform the following duties within the scope of Respiratory Care. A Respiratory Therapist may perform other duties, both major and minor, that are not mentioned below. Essential functions may change from time to time to reflect the current trends within the field of respiratory therapy, and to meet the cardiopulmonary needs of the patients served. The incumbent prepares, calibrates, interfaces, and operates all equipment used in polysomnographic Home Sleep Testing procedures and complex respiratory therapy equipment such as volume and pressure cycled ventilators, respiratory monitors, mass spectrometer, assisted and controlled ventilators, Oximeter, Oxygen analyzers and End Tidal CO2 monitors to provide emergency and intensive respiratory care. Performs various procedures to control and maintain artificial airways including adjunct airways, frequent adjustments in ventilator settings, advanced ventilator techniques including positive end expiratory pressure and continuous positive pressure. Performs bedside pulmonary diagnostic tests including measurement of respiratory compliance, inspiratory force, tidal volume, and dead space to tidal volume ratios. Performs basic spirometry including forced vital capacity, forced expired volume, forced expiratory flow and peak flow. Performs oxygen shunt studies, stress testing with oximeter, and night sleep monitored by oximeter. Performs routine respiratory therapy treatments in all hospital ward areas including but not limited to the Intensive Care Unit, Emergency/Urgent Care, Medical, Post-Operative, such as administering oxygen and therapeutic aerosols (SVN/MDI/DPI), humidity therapy and the collection of respiratory specimens. Responds to all Code Blue and Rapid Response calls/pages. Inserts and manages artificial airways in accordance with the National Out of Operating Room Airway Management (OOORAM) Directive. Monitors patient physiological responses including vital signs, arterial blood gases, blood chemistry, adverse reactions to therapies (change in breath sounds, cough production, physiological responses and patient response) and documents results/evaluation in the medical record and notifies staff and physicians or response. Provides patient instruction for home cardiopulmonary rehabilitation including home care and ventilator patients. Integrates pulmonary care with Anesthesiology, Surgical Services and Medicine Services in pre and post-operative care. Adapts routine techniques to meet special conditions of the patient or special requests from physicians. Records significant observations such as sleep stage, heart rate, respiration rate, oxygen saturation level, body position; presence and/or absence of sleep apnea, snoring, myoclonus, bruxism, cardiac arrhythmias, sleep terrors. Draws arterial, venous and mixed venous blood samples from patients using a needle and syringe or via an arterial line. The incumbent is responsible for filling orders for replacement masks, tubing, filters, humidifier chambers, cushions etc. that the veteran requires to maintain use of his/her PAP therapy device according to policy. T Work Schedule: Varied 8,10,12 hour tours, Night shift with on call requirements. Financial Disclosure Report: Not required
